True story. I once found a headstone at a property I was rehabbing. It nearly scared the crud out of me‼️

Years ago I bought a house off of Craigslist from a sweet older lady. Well, it was a property that had a house AND an old, falling apart mobile home on it.We were early on in the rehab process and as my crew was tearing down the trailer, I noticed something under the frame. We were preparing to start removing the cement footers and I noticed what you see in the picture below. My heart sank.

I sent everyone on break because I needed to find out what this was and what was going on. Was this a grave site? What made matters worse was that I instantly recognized the name. It was her ex-husband and I knew this because his name came up in the transaction of purchasing the property. I immediately called her and asked her upfront, “Ma’am, is your ex-husband buried under the trailer?!”

I was holding my breath because I knew that if his body was there that could potentially mean getting the authorities involved with a potential crime scene being the worst case scenario and all of that meant a longer process with the project and maybe even some issues with reselling it. I thought I was looking at a major can of worms! 😬

She laughed and laughed. Her ex-husband was cremated and on accident the VA also sent this so they put it under the trailer when they received it with his urn. Talk about a sigh of relief! 🤦‍♀️

After some further investigating, I gave my crews the green light and I started to schedule with her to get this back in her possession. What the heck was I going to do with it? As I mentioned, she was an older lady so I immediately declined her request for me to leave it in the driveway for her to pickup. I put it in the back of my truck and was going to arrange to meet her in town in the next few days so that I could load it into her vehicle for her so that she could have her son remove it for her at her house. Well, us two meeting took a few days longer than expected and it didn’t dawn on me how odd my truck looked until I saw that the shovels (from the job site work) and the headstone and realized that people who peeped into my bed probably thought I robbed some cemetery. 😅🤣

Hope you got a kick out of this story! I never know what I’ll find at properties these days.

What is something crazy that you have found at a property? Do you have any real estate horror stories?
